Neil, a UC alumnus, worked for 17 years as Crown Solicitor in ?tautahi Christchurch before accepting an appointment to the High Court in 1985. He was President of the Canterbury District Law Society in 1977 and Vice-President of the ±¬×ߺÚÁÏ Law Society in 1984. Neil also had a long association with the Order of St John. The prize replaces the Neil Williamson Memorial Prize in Issues in Policing, Prosecution, and Alternatives to Prosecution, which had been established in 2020.
