About the course

This Course is open to Domestic and International Students.

This 20 week, full-time NZQA approved programme of study is aimed at individuals who are interested in a career in welding. The Level 3 course offers entry level learners (beginners) the opportunity to learn various aspects and applications of welding theory and practice as well as health and safety.

Students that have successfully completed the Level 3 programme may progress onto the Level 4 Programme that builds on the knowledge and skills gained in Level 3 and prepares students for a career in welding.

Classes are 4 hours per day, 5 days per week. We have 2 intakes per day - Morning and Afternoon.

The Level 3 course offers entry level learners the opportunity to learn all the various aspects and applications of welding theory and practice as well as health and safety.

What the programme will cover

  • Health and Safety, Safe use of tools and equipment.
  • Standard workshop practices, processes and terminology.
  • Welding skills including GMAW (Mig) GTAW (Tig) MMAW (Arc) FCAW (Flux cored).
  • Thermal cutting including Oxy-Fuel and Plasma.
  • Welding Carbon (Mild) Steel, Aluminium and Stainless Steel
  • Use and understand WPS / PQR
  • Able to read and interpret engineering drawings.
  • Life skills including communication skills, teamwork, Career planning and time management.

Entry requirements

  • Domestic Students
    • Domestic students must have NCEA Level 1 or 2 
    • Domestic students must be 16 years or over
    • No previous welding experience needed - we teach you everything you need to know.
    • Applicants should have sufficient physical stamina to be able to weld for several hours per day.
    • Applicants must be able to perform the mechanical tasks required to complete the course unit standards.
  • International Students
    • Applicants must be 18 years or over.
    • International Student applicants must have completed secondary education, equivalent to NCEA Level 1or 2, or have relevant work experience.
    • All Applicants should be physically capable of performing welding tasks, which may involve manual dexterity, standing for extended periods, and lifting heavy objects. Adequate vision and hand-eye coordination are essential for precise welding operations.
    • International Student applicants are required to submit proof of their English language proficiency. 
      • IELTS: General or Academic score of 5.5 with no band score lower than 5.
      • PTE (Academic) score of 42 with no band score lower than 36.
    • International Students must have the correct Visa to study in ±¬×ߺÚÁÏ and are required to have Travel and Health insurance for the duration of their study.

The Welding Academy has provided dedicated Welding training to Domestic and International Students for more than 20 years.

We are an NZQA approved Category 1 training provider.

At our state-of-the-art Welding Training Centre near the CBD in Christchurch, ±¬×ߺÚÁÏ, we train both Domestic and International Students.
