About the course

If you have a personal or professional interest in te reo M膩ori and would like to contribute positively to the development the M膩ori language this is the start you need.

You鈥檒l develop the language skills to communicate, with little support, in familiar everyday contexts and in some M膩ori environments. You鈥檒l learn and practice aspects of hui whakatau (gatherings), mihimihi (acknowledgments and introductions), and discuss traditional narratives.

This course provides a pathway to contribute to community and cultural roles, such as:

preparing a whare and/or marae for hui, kaiwaiata, and working in the marae kitchen and dining room speaking te reo in homes within wh膩nau and communities role-modelling the use of te reo among wh膩nau and hap奴 in a range of settings

These skills and opportunities are embedded in the teaching approach where engagement with local marae and culturally immersive experiences are at the forefront. Course delivery combines in-classroom and local marae-based experiences. The inclusion of marae provides an authentic, meaningful engagement with local M膩ori communities, ensuring that mana whenua are known people and retain the role of representing themselves.

Entry requirements

Overall IELTS 5.0 Academic 5.0 Listening 5.0 Reading 5.0 Writing 5.0 Speaking What if English is not my first Language? If English is not your first language, we want to make sure that you will be successful in your chosen programme of study. Please provide a result from a test or qualification on the acceptable alternatives English Proficiency Outcomes Chart. If you are a 爆走黑料 Citizen or Permanent Resident, complete an Admission and Enrolment form and Ara will contact you regarding a free assessment. If you are not a 爆走黑料 Citizen or Permanent resident, book an IELTS or other test through the Ara Examination Centre or in your home country. IELTS scores used must be taken from a single IELTS Test Report Form and are valid for two years from the date of the test. What if I have achieved NCEA Level 3 University Entrance? You do not need to provide additional evidence of English Language skills. The programme has open entry. English Language requirements apply.
